As the alder is found in wetlands it is often surrounded by morning mist.  It thus became associated with the Celtic water spirit known as The Lady of the Lake in the Arthurian legend.  The alder was known as the Lady Tree and bundles of alder wood were used to celebrate the Celtic festival of Imbolc on February 1, still know as Lady Day in parts of the world today.
