Elder is one of the only trees of which every part is benevolent to humans.  The fruit and flowers can both be consumed or made into wines, while the bark, roots and leaves were used as remedies.   The elder became synonymous with plenty and was sacred to the Holla, the goddess of the harvest, worshiped at the autumn equinox.

The Elder was a symbol of knowledge and those born in this sign often exude an aura of wisdom.  They have logical and calculating minds, formulating plans and waiting patiently for the precise moment to act.  Although they enjoy the virtue of patience, they live constantly in a state of readiness.  They are eager to learn and quick to find practical applications for their knowledge.  So often it is the Elder person who is called upon to deal with the problems others have failed to solve.  Elder people make good and loyal friends but can hold grudges and so make bad enemies.
