Although ivy is not a tree in the botanical sense, the ancient Celts regarded it as one.  Like holly, ivy was brought into the house on the midwinter festival and is still associated with the Christmas and New Year period.  Its black berries that ripen early in the year were considered a promise that nature was only sleeping and would again awake.
