As the leaves of the field maple turn the most spectacular colors in the autumn, it was regarded as the king of the season.  Like the sycamore, its fruits are winged seeds and were seen as messengers of the fairy folk.  It was said that if a maple seed fell into the crib of a newborn child it was an omen of good luck for life.
