Yet another winter tradition that originated with the ancient Celts is the custom of painting pinecones to celebrate mid-winter. As the most abundant evergreen tree, the pine represented a successful passage through winter. It was associated with the horned-god Cernonus, as pine forests were a habitat for his sacred animal, the red dear.
